Application for permission to organize the Palmer State Bank was made on May 13, 1912. The bank opened for business on June 28, 1912 with the purchase of the R. E. Best Bank, one of the county's earliest banks. The Palmer Bank was originally chartered with $25,000 capital stock. Deposits when the bank opened in 1912 totaled $29,098.44 with a total of $54,096.44 in assets. Dr. J. F. Miller, a Palmer physician, served as the first President of the bank from 1912 until 1939.
The bank was originally located in an old frame building on the site where the present branch is located in Palmer. That first site was one of the early landmarks in the village of Palmer, having housed a general store, post office, and grain office before being used as a bank.
The Palmer Bank is one of the oldest financial institutions in Christian County and is one of the few banks that remained open during the depression of the late 1920's and early 1930's.
In 1992 the headquarters of the Palmer Bank was moved to Taylorville, IL In 1993, a branch was established in Chatham, IL. On Sept. 6, 2002, the Chatham branch was sold to Illinois National Bank of Springfield, IL. On April 14, 2006, the Palmer branch was closed.
